Mentoring in the First Five Years

Helping teachers grow and stay in the profession

By June 2016, mentors will be able to support teachers becoming more effective and confident.

Course Description: 

Almost half of all teachers leave in the first 5 years, in large part due to lack of expert mentoring. In this course you will develop a vision of new teacher support that spans the day a new teacher signs up for the profession through his or her critical, fifth year in the classroom. As a community we will develop sets of activities for supporting new teachers along this spectrum, using best practices from pre-service, induction, and in-service mentoring, then enact them with the teachers we support. All participants must be currently mentoring a pre-service or beginning teacher and have at least 3 years of classroom teaching experience.

Course Facilitators: 

Kerri J. Balint Kerri is growing CSET's presence within and beyond Stanford. Her projects include coordinating and growing CSET's professional development offerings, as well as making sure that educators and researchers all over the country, and world, know that CSET is a hub for cultivating excellence in teaching. Additionally, Kerri serves as co-founder of Trellis Education, a non-profit focused on a long-term model for STEM teacher education and support in California. Prior to CSET, Kerri taught 8th grade Algebra in Washington, DC. She received her BA in Musical Arts from Vanderbilt University and an MA in Learning, Design, and Technology from Stanford University.

Megan W. Taylor Dr. Megan W. Taylor is the visiting Associate Director of CSET, focused on several special projects. She is the mathematics design and instructional lead for the Hollyhock Fellowship Program for High School Teachers, as well as the facilitator of a collaboration between CSET and Trellis Education, an organization Dr. Taylor founded focused on a long-term model for STEM teacher education and support in California. Dr. Taylor is visiting from her faculty position at Sonoma State University in the department of Curriculum Studies and Secondary Education. Dr. Taylor taught middle and high school math in the Bay Area and is nationally board certified in secondary mathematics. She earned a BS in Psychology from the University of California, Davis, an MA and PhD in Mathematics Education from Stanford University, and did a postdoctoral fellowship in the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. She lives with her family in San Francisco.
