The Center to Support Excellence in Teaching (CSET) is providing a 3-hour course aimed at high school chemistry teachers. The workshop is based on the 2-week experiences-based course ChemEx2 at Stanford University, which rethinks the role of labs and experiences to foster student learning. Participants will engage in experiments and phenomena while learning how these experiences provide rich opportunities to engage students in the practices of gathering and using evidence to further their understanding of chemical phenomena. Practices we will cover include asking questions, developing and using models, engaging in argument from evidence, and planning and carrying out investigations. Join us to learn and experience the ChemEx2 process, explore chemistry phenomena, address multiple disciplinary core ideas and discuss observations. We will also cover connections to Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards.
This workshop was developed and vetted by the Stanford University Department of Chemistry with collaboration from high school teachers and education professionals.
