As part of the ChemEx2 project, a series of laboratory experiments have been created and validated for high school classrooms. Below is a sample of the materials. Access the complete materials.
Chemistry of Biodiesel Production
Get students thinking about alternative fuel! In groups, students will produce biodiesel on a small scale, carry out calorimetric analyses, and examine the reactions and physical properties of biodiesel.
Suggested use: This lab lends itself to an end-of-year project in which students combine lab data with outside research to form an argument for or against the use of biodiesel.
Why do diapers work? Students learn about bonding and how sodium polyacrylate (SAP/superabsorbent polymer) works in a diaper. Using everyday materials such as sand, bath salts, and fertilizer, students will examine the differences between covalent and ionic materials in terms of conductivity and discover what happens when they are mixed with SAP.
