Stanford Academy for Excellence in Biology Teaching | Oregon Health Sciences University

An in-person professional learning experience at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon where participants will:

• Use research-based strategies to strengthen pedagogical knowledge to enhance students' conceptual understanding
• Focus on integration of Science Practices (NGSS/AP)
• Work collaboratively to enhance curricula that better reflect big ideas and unifying biological concepts
• Explore curriculum-building, teaching practices, and assessments
• Build a network of support and empower teachers to expand and guide students' opportunities to learn at a deeper level

Audience: Designed for 7th-12th grade Biology teachers

Format of course: In-person at Stanford University or OHSU with two instructors facilitated, virtual learning community sessions throughout the 2018-2019 school year.*

Course Facilitators:

Cheryl Ann Hollinger taught high school biology in Pennsylvania for 26 years, teaching AP Biology and Human Anatomy & Physiology for 20+ years, and also taught biology at the college level. A graduate of Wittenberg University with a Biology degree, she also earned a M.Ed. degree from Penn State University. Cheryl has been a member of NABT since 1993. Cheryl is also a member of NSTA. She is a peer reviewer for both The American Biology Teacher and The Science Teacher.

An experienced workshop leader, Cheryl leads local, regional, national, and international AP workshops and Summer Institutes. She is an AP consultant trainer and mentor, an experienced AP Exam Reader, PRAXIS Exam item writer, and an AP Biology Insight consultant. Cheryl serves as an HHMI Ambassador, leading workshops at regional and national conferences. She is excited to return to CSET as an NABT/BSCS Region IX Biology Teacher Academy Leader.

Cheryl has been recognized for teaching excellence, including the NABT Outstanding Biology Teacher Award, Outstanding Educator Award (Phi Delta Kappa) and the Siemens Award for Excellence in Advanced Placement Science Teaching. The first recipient of the Kim Foglia AP Biology Service Award, Cheryl loves teaching and mentoring teachers. She enjoys volunteering for several organizations in her community. Traveling, reading, hiking, and camping are some of her favorite things to do in her spare time.

Mickey Laney-Jarvis is a high school and college educator. She teaches high school AP and honor's biology, behavioral ecology, anatomy, and also college biology, and psychology. As an instructor in the CSET Teacher Academy Experience, Mickey's goal is to empower educators to lean forward into their practice and be challenged and invigorated. Mickey lives in Southwest Oregon with her husband, neighborhood cats, and two big hairy dogs. She is an avid birder, hiker, explorer, wanderer, and golfer.

Barbara Haig was born, raised, and educated in Scotland, she has been teaching AP Biology and other sciences at a small private school in Los Olivos, CA since the early 1990’s. Currently, the STEM Department Chair, as well as Director of Leadership and Girls’ Varsity Soccer Coach, Barbara, wears the many hats typical of an educator in a small school setting. Being part of the AP Leadership Academy has helped her find and become part of a larger community of teachers all of whom are invested in ensuring that Biology education is an exciting, stimulating and rewarding experience for all of our students.

Dana Navarro is passionate about science education and has been working to inspire her CP, Honors, and AP Biology students at Thousand Oaks High School for 20 years. She earned her B.A. in Biological Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara. This is also where she earned her teaching credential and her M.A. in Education. In 2014 she earned her National Board Certification and is a member of NABT, CSTA, and NSTA. She is the sophomore adviser for the Health Science Majors Program and the National Honor Society. She has been the science department chair and has written the district course of study for the Biology H class. She is a member of the first cohort of the NABT/BSCS AP Biology Leadership Academy and has led teacher workshops at the school, district, county, state and national levels, and is currently on her district committee to plan professional development which supports the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards at the K-12 level. Dana looks forward to working with teachers participating in the Academy to help transform biology education.

Beth Dixon teaches AP Biology and Biology at Western Sierra Collegiate Academy in Rocklin, California. She is the K-12 district science coach for Rocklin Academy and the Region IX coordinator for the National Association of Biology Teachers. Beth has an undergraduate degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and a masters in Education. She is currently working on her Masters in Biology through the University of Miami Ohio's Global Field Program. Beth is improving her practice every day and is thrilled to be a change-agent for biology education through CSET at Stanford.
